Red Light Therapy
Red light (RL) or near-infrared (NIR) light therapy, sometimes referred to as photobiomodulation, is a light-based treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to improve the health and function of the cells within the body. These light wavelengths do not contain any harmful UV rays such as the sun so there is no risk of damaging the skin. Instead, RL and NIR wavelengths heal, recover and boost the functionality of the cells, helping to supercharge and rejuvenate the body.
What Does Red Light / Near Infrared Light Therapy Do?
Light therapy modalities work just as photosynthesis does for a plant. These special spectrums of light penetrate the body through the skin and supercharge the mitochondria (think of these as your cells batteries) of the cells. These batteries help produce energy so that the cells can perform tasks more efficiently such build, repair and recover damaged tissues of the body.
What's The Difference Red Light & Near-Infrared Light?
Red light is a visibly red colored light that has a wavelength of approximately 660nm, whereas near-infrared light is not visible to the naked eye and has a longer wavelength that is approximately 850nm in length.
Because there is different wavelengths with each of these lights, the application and benefits of each vary. The shorter wavelength experienced with red light is more practical for superficial concerns pertaining to hair regrowth and skin concerns; think things like wrinkles, scars, stretch marks, cuts, burns, skin irritations, eczema, psoriasis etc. The longer wavelength in near infrared light is better suited for deeper tissue concerns such as muscles, joints and even bones.
By using both simultaneously you can reap the benefits of both wavelengths and address all the things between surface layer and approximately 5mm beneath the skin.
Practical Applications
When using red / near-infrared light as a way to enhance your recovery and health, consistency is a major factor to reaping the maximum benefits. Depending of the desired outcomes and reason for use may influence the type of light, duration and frequency to some extent – but adding this modality to your wellness routine a minimum 3 times per week (upwards of daily), for 10-20 minutes per session can have your body feeling and performing its best and helping to keep your batteries charged!
Based on current research, red and near-infrared light can help with:
Skin Care
- Reduced wrinkles, scars and acne by increasing collagen in the skin.
- Increased wound healing.
Pain Relief & Inflammation:
- Reduced joint pain in conditions like arthritis.
- Helps with muscle soreness after hard workouts by decreasing inflammation.
Mental Health & Brain Function
- Improves mood and reduces symptoms of depression.
- May help with brain injuries by supporting brain cell repair.
Sleep & Energy Levels
- Balances melatonin, the sleep hormone, for better rest.
- Boosts overall energy levels by enhancing cellular function.
Performance & Recovery for Athletes
- Speeds up muscle recovery after workouts.
- Enhances strength and endurance by improving blood flow and reducing oxidative stress.
Chronic Conditions
- May help with symptoms of fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, concussions, and even long-term conditions like diabetes by reducing inflammation and supporting metabolic health at its core.
